Panthers Start Out Hot But Cools Quickly In Loss To Baylor

BOX SCORE

WACO, Texas – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team dropped its sixth straight contest following a 90-54 non-conference loss to Baylor on Tuesday night at the Ferrell Center.

The Panthers charged out of the gates full of energy against the No. 7/8 Bears as sophomore Jules Montgomery hit the opening basket followed by freshman guard Montrael Scott's back-to-back three-pointers for an early 8-0 lead with 16:58 remaining. Baylor's Perry Jones III broke the scoreless drought with a basket but Scott continued to sizzle from the field with his third trey and an 11-2 advantage.

Baylor scored six straight points to climb within 11-8 but Scott once again kept them at bay with his 11th point of the first half as PV led 13-8 at the 12:39 mark.  Baylor's Pierre Jackson narrowed its deficit to 13-11 on the following possession and tied the contest at 13-all with two free throws shortly thereafter.  PV's Ryan Gesiakowski nailed a three-pointer to put the Panthers back ahead 16-13 but the scoring would cease from that point for the Panthers as the Bears broke the game open with a 16-0 run to lead 29-16 with 6:49 left on the clock.  PV pulled to within 10 (29-16) on Scott's fourth trey of the half but the Bears went on another late surge to close the half ahead 46-24.

A three-pointer from PV's Jourdan DeMuynck narrowed the gap to 53-36 early in the second half.  That would be the closest the Panthers would get as Baylor went on to capture its 12th straight victory in the all-time series versus Prairie View A&M.

Making his first career start, Scott led the Panthers with a career-high 14 points, including 4-of-5 from the three-point line.  Montgomery grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 13 points.

"It was a little emotional. A couple of guys came close to home," head coach Byron Rimm II said. "Our freshman did a good job, stepped out and knocked down the first three 3s. ... It's a 40-minute game. You can't get too excited or too depressed how we played the first 4 to 5 minutes. We came out strong and we've got to keep that momentum."

PV returns to action next Tuesday night as they'll battle Big 12 member Iowa State in Ames, Ia.
