BOX SCORE
ALEXANDRIA, La. - The Prairie View A&M soccer team saw its dream run come to an end in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Friday night after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Mississippi Valley State in a penalty kick shootout.
With the game tied at one after the end of regulation and the overtime periods the Lady Panthers' season came down to what every coach fears the most. Penalty kicks. It's a phenomenon in soccer that has nothing to do with who has the better team, but more to do with ball placement and anticipation by the goalies.
"I think we were the better team," Lady Panthers coach Abe Garcia said. "We played very strong and I felt that we out-worked them. It just didn't fall our way."
The Lady Panthers lost 4-1 in the penalty kick period with forward Angie Guillory making the only penalty shot in the shootout. J.D. Devany scored Prairie View A&M's lone goal in regulation to tie the game at one and send it into the extra periods. The game will officially be scored as 1-1, and Garcia can rest assured knowing that his team played its best soccer late in the season when it mattered the most.
Prairie View A&M won its last four games before being ousted from the SWAC Tournament in penalty kicks.
"I'm really proud of them," Garcia said. "They played their hearts out and probably played their best soccer all year. I'm disappointed that they didn't get the victory, but I felt like they were more than deserving of winning."
