Lady Panthers Protect Home Court With 52-43 Win Over Mississippi Valley

The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers returned to their winning ways after defeating Mississippi Valley State 52-43 behind Dominique Smith's 15-point, eight-rebound effort on Saturday evening at the William J. Nicks Building.

In a tight race out of the gate, both sides matched one another point-for-point as there were five ties during the first 13 minutes of the first half.  Mississippi Valley State, which defeated PV in double overtime on Jan. 22 in Itta Bena, broke away briefly with four straight points to claim a 20-16 margin at the 5:11 mark.  However, Prairie View regrouped and forced three turnovers over the final 3:23 as they outscored MVSU 7-3 en route to a 23-22 halftime advantage.

Mississippi Valley quickly responded to jumpstart the second stanza as Courtney O'Bryant nailed a corner trey with the shot clock running down for a one-point cushion at 26-25 with 17:28 on the clock.   Refusing to be denied, senior Robin Jones earned her way to the free-throw line after a hard drive and hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to knot the contest at 26-apiece. Jones once again came up big for the Lady Panthers as she sparked the crowd with a huge block on the defensive end of the floor that resulted in a transition basket for the Lady Panthers as Whitney Williams scored on an uncontested layup giving Prairie View the lead at 28-26.

With momentum in their favor, the Lady Panthers turned up the defensive pressure holding Mississippi Valley scoreless during a four-minute span which enabled PV to grow their lead to 33-26 via a 7-0 run. However, the Devilettes refused to go down easily as they climbed to within two points at 34-32 following Alia Frank's layup with 11:04 remaining.

The Lady Panthers created some much-needed separation as a slashing layup by Jones triggered a 10-2 spurt that stretched the lead to 44-34 with 7:14 left. Mississippi Valley wouldn't fall easy as they hung around by drawing within six on multiple occasions over the next four minutes.

With PV ahead 47-41 at the 3:30 mark, Latia Williams converted a layup in the paint for an eight-point margin and a Sharde Henry block led to a free throw by Siarra Soliz and a 50-41 lead approximately one minute later.  After a missed three-pointer by Mississippi Valley's Lenise Stallings missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, Latia Williams closed out the contest for Prairie View with two free threes for an 11-point margin.

Siarra Soliz followed Smith with 14 points and one rebound while Jones accounted for nine points, four rebounds and three blocks. Latia Williams and Whitney Williams finished with six points apiece.

Prairie View returns to action on Monday as they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its annual NCAA Pack the House Challenge game.  The game will be televised live on ESPNU as they'll tip off at 3:30 p.m. in the William Nicks Building.
