MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on the road as Alabama State claimed a 68-61 victory on Saturday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Prairie View began the game on a positive note as they led 13-7 following Michael Webb's dunk with 13:32 remaining. The Panthers went cold from that point as ASU heated up and went on an 11-0 run which spanned three minutes for an 18-13 advantage. A three-pointer from Duwan Kornegay narrowed PV's deficit to 18-16 but ASU bumped its margin to 28-20 as they outscored PV 10-4 over the next four minutes. A basket by Cortney Bell drew PV to within 28-22 but once again, Alabama State answered as they led by 12 on two occasions from that point. The Panthers cut the gap to 36-30 with two minutes left on Michael Griffin's layup but ASU went into the half up 38-30 as the Panthers went scoreless over the final two minutes.
Alabama State began the second half on fire as they went on a 7-2 run to claim its largest lead of the evening at 13 (45-32) with 16:16 on the clock. However, Prairie View wouldn't be denied as they rallied by outscoring ASU 18-7 over the next eight minutes to close within two at 52-50 after two free throws from Kornegay. The Hornets responded by pushing their margin back to eight on three occasions but PV hung around and trimmed the ASU lead to 65-61 on a free throw from Brandon Webb with 38 ticks remaining in the contest.
PV committed a foul on the ensuing possession and ASU took advantage by nailing two free throws for a 67-61 lead with 25 seconds left. The Panthers failed to make a basket from that point as ASU held on to split the season series between both teams.
Kornegay led PV with 11 points while Simpson followed with 10 points and eight assists. Bell was the team's top rebounder with six in 19 minutes of action.
The Panthers return to action on Monday as they conclude their final regular season road trip of the season against Alabama A&M beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
