HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Prairie View A&M suffered from a second-half lapse as Alabama A&M used a 15-4 run midway through the period as they knocked off the Lady Panthers 61-50 on Monday evening at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
From the tip, Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M traded baskets during the early portion of the contest as AAMU took advantage of its homecourt by connecting on its first three baskets en route to a 10-9 lead nearly seven minutes into the contest.
The Lady Panthers claimed their first lead of the evening as freshman guard Siarra Soliz recorded a steal which led to a fast break layup and an 11-10 margin with 11:02 left to play in the first period. The lead would last less than 30 seconds though as Alabama A&M reclaimed the lead on the ensuing possession as forward Chelsea Marshall knocked down a jumper for a 12-11 margin.
Prairie View continued to hang around over the next seven minutes and remained within striking distance as they trailed by three points for most of the way. However, AAMU turned the momentum in its favor as Alyssa Strickland nailed a three-pointer that triggered a 10-4 spurt earning Alabama A&M a comfortable cushion of 31-22 in the final minute of the period. Senior center Whitney Williams got the Lady Panthers back on track as she accounted for a turnaround jumper to cut the deficit to 31-24 at the break.
The Lady Panthers came out the halftime tunnel on fire as Soliz ignited a 12-4 run as the Houston native accounted for seven points during the run for a 36-35 lead. Prairie View surrendered the lead briefly but regained it several minutes later as Latia Williams nailed a trey with 10:10 remaining. However, it wouldn't take long for AAMU to seize the momentum as the Strikland tandem of Brittney and Alyssa keyed an 8-2 run for a 48-43 lead at the 8:16 mark.
Both teams went scoreless over the next three minutes until an AAMU free throw by Marshall pushed its lead to 49-43 as the clock read 5:54. Soliz nailed a jumper nearly a minute later to pull PV within four at 49-45 but AAMU scored six straight during a three-minute span for a 55-45 advantage. The Lady Panthers cut their deficit to seven to 57-50 with 1:05 left but that would be the closest they could get as their three-game winning streak came to an end.
Senior Robin Jones scored a game-high 15 points while adding three rebounds. Soliz followed with 13 points, three steals and one assist.
The Lady Panthers will have a short week as they return to action on Thursday, March 3 for their final home stretch of the 2010-11 season with a matchup versus Alcorn State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the William Nicks Building.
