HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther softball team stepped into SWAC play this weekend as they participated in the annual SWAC Softball Roundups. The Lady Panthers are currently 1-2 in the roundups but could've easily been 3-0 as they dropped a pair of contests in the closing innings.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 5, ALABAMA STATE 4
The Lady Panthers overcame a four-run deficit after scoring five runs in the fifth and sixth frames to defeat ASU 5-4 in the opener.
Alabama State jumped ahead 4-0 after two but PV responded with three runs in the fifth after RBIs from Katelyn Den Beste and Jasmine Littles. PV moved ahead for good in the sixth as freshman Sarina Rios and senior Destini Darby each had an RBI for the final margin.
Bridget Coronado picked up the win as she struck out four in seven innings of action. Rios and Darby led PV with a pair of hits each.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 13, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 6
A strong start by the Lady Panthers failed to hold up at the end as Mississippi Valley pulled away for a 13-6 advantage.
The Lady Panthers exploded out of the gate with four runs to open the game as Darby and Shannon Harris combined for three RBIs. MVSU tied it at four after the bottom of the first and crossed home three more runs in the second to lead 7-4. PV drew to within 7-6 on Leanna Flores' two-RBI single in the fourth but MVSU answered with four runs in the bottom frame to put the game away.
Lauren Grun earned the loss on the mound while the freshman tandem of Flores and Den Beste combined for seven of PV's 10 hits and two RBIs.
ALCORN STATE 8, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 4
PV had the defending SWAC Champion Alcorn State on the ropes but the Lady Braves broke open a deadlocked ballgame with four runs in the sixth to claim an 8-4 win.
ASU opened the game with a two-run homer but PV drew to within a run in the third as Den Beste drove in Rios for a 2-1 deficit. The Lady Braves moved ahead 4-1 in the fourth as they crossed home two runs on two outs but PV fought back with four runs in the sixth to knot the contest at 4-all. However, ASU moved ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run frame to secure the win.
Coronado earned the loss despite a 13-strikeout performance. Rios finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Coronado and Kesha Hagerman went 2-for-3. Senior Artavia Woods had a strong game as she led the team with two RBIs.
