GAME BOX SCORE
The Prairie View A&M Panthers overcome a slow start and broke away from Southern midway through the second half as they closed out the regular season with a 72-57 victory on Saturday at the William J. Nicks Building.
Even though Southern entered Saturday's contest without an opportunity to play in the SWAC Tournament, the Jaguars came out inspired as they roared out to a 10-4 lead nearly four minutes in. The Panthers managed to fight back and tied the game at 16 on a Brandon Webb layup but the Jaguars kept on running as they went on an 11-3 run to claim a 27-19 advantage at the 7:07 mark. However, the light came on for the Panthers from that point as they put together a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to lead 33-29 with 1:24 remaining in the half. The lead was brief though as SU scored the final four points of the first half en route to a 34-33 halftime advantage.
Both teams were neck-and-neck to begin the second stanza until PV junior guard Michael Griffin scored six of PV's eight points over a one-minute span to move the Panthers ahead 45-38 at the 15:37 mark. Southern countered and closed to within three following back-to-back baskets but PV broke the game open from that point as Tim Meadows, Duwan Kornegay and Brandon Webb keyed a 16-5 surge to up the lead to 63-47 with 6:39 remaining.
The lead grew to as large as 17 (67-50) on Brandon Webb's dunk as the clock read 4:33. From that point, PV cruised to victory as the Panthers closed out the 2010-11 regular season on a two-game winning streak entering next week's SWAC Tournament.
Senior center Brandon Webb had his second straight double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Kornegay pulled down 15 rebounds with nine points while Michael Griffin scored 21 points with three steals.
The Panthers finished seventh overall in the SWAC standings and will battle No. 2 seed Jackson State in the first round of the 2011 SWAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at the Garland Special Events Center.
