GAME BOX SCORE
The Prairie View A&M softball team fell victim to a seventh-inning home run as Southern edged the Lady Panthers 3-2 on Friday afternoon.
Southern scored the game's first run as Victoria Stewart singled up the middle for an early 1-0 lead after the first. Both teams were solid defensively from that point as no runs were scored over the next four innings. Prairie View loaded the bases in the fourth but failed to take advantage as SU escaped unscathed.
After getting out of a defensive jam in the sixth, Prairie View sophomore Lauren Grun recorded a two-out single down the right field line. Immediately after Grun's hit, freshman Sarina Rios blasted a shot over the center field wall which gave the Lady Panthers a 2-1 lead entering the seventh.
Southern leadoff batter Gailynn Thibeaux reached based via an error to open the seventh. Lady Panther senior pitcher Bridget Coronado bounced back and struck out two straight but Southern reclaimed the lead on Audrey Phillips's two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall for a 3-2 advantage.
Senior Artavia Woods hit a two-out single in the bottom frame but PV freshman Katelyn Den Beste hit a comebacker to the pitcher for the game's final out.
The series concludes on Saturday as the Lady Panthers host Southern in a noon doubleheader.
