BOX SCORE
Despite a solid overall defensive performance, the Prairie View A&M women's soccer team dropped their 11th consecutive game, losing 1-0 to Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon at home.
Sam Houston State outshot Prairie View A&M 18-to-2 and had 12 shots on goal. The Lady Panthers were forced to stay in a defensive mind frame and freshman goalie Bianca Garza played a near-perfect game, recording 11 saves.
At the 8:00 mark in the first half, Sam Houston State forward Kayla Anderson scored on a shot from about 25 yards out on a free kick. Garza appeared to have another great save and got her hands on the ball, but Anderson's kick was a little too high and slipped in at the top of the goal.
As the minutes ticked down in the second stanza, the Lady Panthers got a little more aggressive on the offensive end as they picked up a shot on goal in the final 20 minutes of the match. Freshman Gabriella Ramos kicked a low-flying ball that was deflected by Sam Houston State goalie Mallory Garthwaite in the 72nd-minute. In the closing minutes of the game, Ramos made a beautiful cross for junior J.D. Devany; however Prairie View could not capitalize on the play.
Prairie View (0-11) opens up SWAC play on Friday at Jackson State with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
