Lady Panthers Drop Heartbreaker To Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State's Jasmine Greer found an opening in the high-pressure defensive front of Prairie View A&M and made the game-winning layup with seven seconds left to break the tie and give Jackson State the 48-46 victory.

The Lady Panthers could not capitalize off of a nine-minute, 13-3 run that was used to take a 46-45 lead with 1:17 left in the game after two converted free throws by sophomore guard LaReahn Washington. Following Washington's free throws, Greer made one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 46.

Prairie View (4-11, 1-3 SWAC) went scoreless in the final minute of the game, including a potential game-tying floater by Washington as time expired. Washington finished with six points and five steals.

“Their team made plays when they had to, and we didn't make plays,” Prairie View A&M head coach Toyelle Wilson said. “We didn't make wide open shots and we didn't hit crucial free throws when the game was tied and it cost us.”

The Lady Jaguars started the second half out on a 15-6 run to take a 39-28 lead. However, the Lady Panthers responded with a full-court trap to spark a 5-0 run that was capped off with a Latia Williams' jumper with 11:21 left in the game to cut her team's deficit to 39-33. The Lady Tigers received a spark of their own with a three-point shot by Takeya Felder with 10:38 left. Williams finished with four points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a hot start, taking a 12-7 lead over Jackson State following two made free throws with 13:00 left in the first half. However, Lady Tigers went on to out-score Prairie View 17-10 to close out the half and take a 24-22 lead into the locker room. Michaela Burton scored six first-half points on 2-for-3 shooting from three-point territory. Junior guard JaQuandria Williams also added six points in the half and finished the game with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Jackson State led Prairie View at the half thanks to a seven-point first half performance by Kiana McCarty. She also added three blocks in the paint and three rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers in each of those statistical categories in the first half.

Greer had a game-high 12 points for Jackson State (6-8, 3-2 SWAC). Prairie View junior guard Kiara Etienne had a team-high 11 points.

The Lady Panthers continue their road trip with a trip to Dallas to take on Grambling State at 5:30 Monday night in the Ellis Davis Field House.
