The Prairie View A&M basketball teams return home for the first time since Jan. 5 to face Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.in the William J. Nicks Building.
After an up-and-down start, the Panthers are beginning to find their groove as they're on a two-game winning streak with impressive road wins over Jackson State and Grambling State last weekend. During both wins, the Panthers established control early on by shooting lights out from the field as they shot 48 percent overall and 50 percent from beyond the three-point line. In addition, the wins marked the first time since 2008 that the Panthers swept the Jackson State/Grambling State road swing.
Sophomore guard Louis Munks is coming into his own as the Arlington, Texas native was named SWAC Player of the Week this past week for his play against JSU and GSU. Last week, Munks averaged 23.5 points, six rebounds and nailed nine three-pointers as he returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 6. Fellow guard Jourdan DeMuynck leads the Panthers in scoring with 9.5 points and five rebounds per game while sophomore forward Demondre Chapman chips in with nine points and 4.6 rebounds. Ryan Gesiakowski follows with 8.2 points along with Munks' 7.9 points.
The Lady Panthers improved to 5-11 (2-3 SWAC) with the hopes of reaching .500 in SWAC play. The Lady Panthers rode standout performances by junior guards Kiara Etienne and JaQuandria Williams to pick up the win against Grambling State on Monday evening after falling in the closing seconds to Jackson State on Monday.
Etienne scored a game-high 21 points in the Lady Panthers' win in Dallas. It was her fourth 20-point game of the season. Since going off for 16 points against Cal State Bakersfield on Dec. 14 in the Cal Classic, she has averaged over 18 points per contest. Etienne leads the team with 14.3 points per game this season and has also led the team in scoring for three consecutive games. Junior guard Latia Williams is averaging 10.4 points per contest and leads the team with 8.4 boards per game.
Mississippi Valley State sits in both the men's and women's standings. Both teams are coming off convincing wins over Southern University last Monday
