Prairie View A&M Wins SWAC West Division

Lady Panthers Earn No. 1 Seed In SWAC Tournament

BOX SCORE
This time last year, the Prairie View A&M women's soccer team was on the outside looking in on the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. However, on Sunday after defeating Jackson State in a 2-1 win at home, the Lady Panthers (8-10, 3-1 SWAC) learned they had won the SWAC Western Division and earned a No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tourney.

Prairie View A&M took care of business after losing 2-1 to Texas Southern on Oct. 19 in overtime, winning it's final two games of the regular season. On Sunday freshman forward Ariana Roundtree took a shot from outside of the box and made it bend past the outstretched hand of Jackson State's keeper in the 30th minute. The Lady Tigers tied it with a Shahamin Nunes goal in the 61st minute, but Prairie View A&M bounced back with a goal in the 77th minute by freshman midfielder Kara Ballard to go ahead for good. Senior forward Yosselyn Aguilar was credited with the assists on both goals.

The win, coupled with a 4-0 win over, Western Division opponent, Southern on Friday gave the Lady Panthers their best shot of earning a No. 1 seed, but they still needed help from Southern, which came through with a 1-0 victory over Texas Southern on Sunday to officially put Prairie View on top of its division.

“We are excited for the program,” Garcia said. “We are excited for the seniors, who represent my first recruiting class. I'm glad that they had an accomplishment to finish up at Prairie View with, and hopefully this will fuel us to do well in the tournament.”

Prairie View A&M will play Alabama A&M in the first round of the SWAC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Johnny Downs Complex in Alexandria, La. The game time has yet to be determined.
