The Prairie View A&M soccer team advanced to the semi-final round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament for the second-consecutive season after a 3-2 win over Alabama State in Round 1 Thursday afternoon in Alexandria, La.
College Sports Madness First Team All-SWAC Forward Yosselyn Aguilar scored a goal and had an assist to lead Prairie View A&M to a 3-2 win. The Lady Panthers (9-10) will play Jackson State in the semifinal round on at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Prairie View A&M scored first goal in the 25th minute when Aguilar sprinted through ASU defenders, blasting in a kick from the right side of the box. Freshman forward Christine Hanson scored the Lady Panthers' second goal of the half in the 33rd minute with an assist from Aguilar.
Alabama State responded when junior forward India Pleasant assisted sophomore forward Alexandria Cannon with 5:49 left in the first period to cut the lead to 2-1 at intermission.
The Lady Panthers quickly added to their lead in the second period when senior midfielder Navyd Diaz scored to give Prairie View A&M a 3-1 lead just two minutes into the second period.
Cannon brought the Lady Hornets to within a goal with her second tally of the game off of an assist from Anastasia McCleary. However, that would be the final goal of the season for ASU.
Sophomore goal keeper Bianca Garza picked up the win and had four saves on the afternoon. Garza she turned in a clutch performance after making an appearance on the conference podcast SWAC Chat. Be sure to listen to her pre-tournament interview before Friday's 6 p.m. game against Jackson State.
