Playing in his first game of the season, senior guard Jourdan DeMuynck didn't disappoint as he posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Prairie View A&M Panthers defeated Schreiner University 80-51 on Sunday afternoon in the team's home opener in the William Nicks Building.
The Panthers started out slow with only five points in the first five minutes of the contest but made up for their lack of scoring on the defensive end as they held the Mountaineers scoreless during that span. Once Schreiner scored, the Panthers found their offensive groove as junior guard Louis Munks, DeMuynck and post Josh Eleby scored baskets for an 11-6 advantage with 11:52 remaining on the clock.
Schreiner continued to hang around and eventually claimed the lead as Ryan Evans nailed a layup for a 15-13 margin at the 8:04 mark. Panther senior guard Ronald Wright answered to knot the game at 15-all on the ensuing possession and sophomore guard Montrael Scott broke the tie with a layup after a missed Mountaineer three-pointer.
From that point, the tide of the game turned as the Panthers forced six turnovers which turned into a 19-2 run as they broke the game open 34-17. During the run, Eleby dominated the paint with two dunks along with two treys from senior shooter Ryan Gesiakowski. The Panthers closed out the half ahead 39-22 as DeMuynck nailed a jumper with four seconds remaining.
Schreiner closed to within 13 points (42-29) as John Whitty nailed back-to-back treys to open the second half. The Panthers shook off the early setback and broke the game open as they led by as much as 28 points with 9:31 remaining. During the surge, Scott, Eleby and DeMuynck controlled the game as they combined to score 15 points for the team's second-to-largest margin of the evening. From that point, the Panthers went into cruise control as Wesley Afolayan nailed a layup off a Scott assist to give the Panthers their largest margin of the night at 31 points with 34 ticks remaining.
DeMuynck led the Panthers with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Eleby followed with 17 points, four rebounds and three blocks while Scott scored 14 points with three steals. Carl Blair dished out a team-high eight assists while Gesiakowski had four steals.
The Panthers close out their homestand on Tuesday night as they'll host Arlington Baptist in a doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the women's basketball team will host Stephen F. Austin in the Baby Dome.
