BOX SCORE
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Prairie View A&M Panthers struggled to find the basket while UCLA felt right at home from the field as they dropped a 95-53 decision to the Bruins at the newly-renovated Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night.
Both teams were even to begin the game as they were tied at 7-all following the first media timeout. Prior to the timeout, California native and junior post Jules Montgomery started out hot with five of PV's seven points. UCLA began to heat up from the field the following the timeout and pushed its lead to 15-9 as the Panthers shot 1-of-9 from the field over the next four minutes while also committing two turnovers.
Following the second media timeout, UCLA's Norman Powell drained two free throws for an eight-point (17-9) advantage but senior guard Ronald Wright kept the Panthers within striking distance with a jumper at the 11:27 mark for a 17-11 deficit. From that point, it was all UCLA as the Bruins, who shot 59.4 percent in the first half, went on a 13-2 surge to extend its lead to 30-13 at the 7:33 mark. The Panthers struggled with their shooting once again during that span as they shot 2-of-8 from the field.
As the half came to an end, Prairie View A&M ended its drought as junior forward Rasi Jenkins and senior guard Ryan Gesiakowski hit back-to-back baskets to keep the Panthers within somewhat of a reach as UCLA led 36-18 heading into the final media timeout. However, Prairie View A&M struggled at the end of the half with two costly turnovers which led to two late baskets by the Bruins en route to a 46-23 halftime deficit.
Head coach Byron Rimm II changed things up to begin the second stanza with a different starting lineup as he inserted Wright, Jenkins and freshman Cory Jones. The lineup displayed a solid defensive effort as they held the Bruins scoreless for nearly two minutes. However, Prairie View A&M continued to struggle from the field as they could account for only four baskets within the first eight minutes of the half. UCLA cooled down from the field in the half but they began to find success from the free throw line as they nailed 14 free throws in the second half to extend their margin.
Gesiakowski led the Panthers with 14 points while Jourdan DeMuynck finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Shabazz Muhammad led UCLA with 25 points followed by a 16-point, 11-rebound performance from Kyle Anderson.
The Panthers won't return to the court until next Saturday, Dec. 22 as they'll face Cal at 4 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif.
