Panthers Struggle From The Field In Loss To Jackson State

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M had its worst shooting performance of the season as Jackson State managed to run away with a 62-48 victory on Saturday evening in the Baby Dome.

Both teams were even to begin the game until the Panthers (10-13, 6-5 SWAC) put together a 6-0 run to lead 18-12 at the 10:54 mark.  Jackson State cut PV's lead to 18-17 nearly two minutes later but Ryan Gesiakowski upped PV's lead back to four (21-17) after his first trey of the evening.  Jackson State's Kelcey Howard began to heat up from that point with seven straight points to give JSU a 22-21 advantage.  The Panthers regained the lead following Ronald Wright's layup with 6:06 remaining and remained on top for almost two minutes.  However, Jackson State closed out the half on an 8-1 run as they claimed a 30-26 halftime advantage.

The Panthers came out cold to begin the second half as Jackson State extended its lead to 44-31 with 13:30 left in the contest.  Prairie View's Demondre Chapman scored three of PV's next six points over the next two minutes to cut JSU's deficit to six at 44-38.  With the Panthers closing in, JSU's Keelsee Stewart nailed a trey for a nine-point PV deficit but Gesiakowski kept the Panthers within striking distance with a 3-pointer at the 8:31 mark.  Prairie View missed its next two shots from that point and never recovered as JSU went on a 7-0 run for a 13-point advantage.  The Panthers would draw no closer than 10 the remainder of the way as the Tigers managed to split the season series.

Gesiakowski led the Panthers with 15 points while Chapman scored 11 with a team-high seven rebounds.  Howard led the Tigers with 20 points in 38 minutes of action.

The Panthers return to action on Monday night as they'll close out their homestand with a matchup versus Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. in the Baby Dome.
