BOX SCORE
Prairie View A&M overcame a sluggish first half performance with a solid second half as they pulled away from Grambling State en route to a 71-52 victory on Monday night in the William J. Nicks Building.
Grambling State jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on before PV's Jourdan DeMuynck came off the bench to score the team's first points of the evening nearly four minutes into the contest. Grambling State remained ahead over the next five minutes until Ryan Gesiakowski's 3-pointer moved the Panthers on top 14-13 at the 11:06 mark. The lead was short-lived though as the Tigers went on a 16-6 run to claim their largest lead of the game as they led 29-20 with 6:30 left following a Quincy Roberts' 3-pointer. After a less-than-stellar performance on Saturday against Jackson State, the Panthers dug deep and found themselves as the half came to an end by outscoring the Tigers 11-4 for a 33-31 halftime deficit.
Prairie View A&M took its first lead of the second half as Gesiakowski nailed a trey for a 36-35 margin at the 17:18 mark. His trey began a 10-0 surge which turned a two-point deficit into an eight-point (43-35) advantage four minutes later. Grambling State responded with a 7-2 surge immediately after the run to draw within three but the Panthers got stingy on the defensive end as they blocked five shots and held the Tigers to a paltry 4-of-19 shooting performance from the field over the final 13 minutes. Offensively, the Panthers sizzled as they closed out the game shooting over 60 percent (12-of-20) in that same span.
Louis Munks, who saw his eight-game double digit scoring streak come to an end on Saturday, led the Panthers with 19 points after scoring 15 in the second half. DeMuynck and Gesiakowski both followed with 11 points each while junior center Mayol Riathin had a career night with 11 rebounds, six points and three blocks. Roberts led Grambling with 21 points and seven boards.
The Panthers hit the road for a key road trip at Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Itta Bena, Miss. followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
