The Prairie View A&M men and women's basketball teams both have opportunities to turn the tides in Southwestern Athletic Conference play and move up in the standings with wins this weekend over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Lady Panthers have their most important road trip to date in front of them. Sitting at 7-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Prairie View A&M has a chance to move from up in the standings from its fifth place position if it takes out second-place Mississippi Valley State (9-4 SWAC) today at 2:30 p.m. and then takes down a winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff Squad at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Prairie View A&M already has wins over both Mississippi Valley State and UAPB this season and has been playing some inspired basketball of late, winning three-consecutive games against Jackson State, Grambling State and Texas Southern.
In a 61-56 home victory over the Devilettes on Jan. 21 the Lady Panthers used the home-court edge to their advantage and held off a late Mississippi Valley State surge for the win. Lady Panthers junior guard
Latia Williams torched the Devilettes for 18 points and 12 rebounds. Williams has kept up that pace since the win. She is averaging 14.9 points and 9.8 rebounds in SWAC play.
At 4:30 p.m. the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team has the task trying to upend Mississippi Valley State (13-0) the only undefeated team in SWAC play. The Panthers are currently in third place and one game behind TSU for second place. This weekend's trip will
had a direct impact on the standings as both UAPB and MVSU are tough at home historically.
The Panthers lost to Mississippi Valley State 81-57 in round one on Jan. 21 and defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 76-75. The Panthers will turn to sophomore guard
Louis Munks on the perimeter to get the job done.
Munks is the team's leading scorer (10.0 ppg) and has hit double digits in nine of the past 10 games. He scored 15 points against Mississippi Valley in the past meeting and is coming off a 19-point effort Monday night versus Grambling State.
