BOX SCORE
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - For the second game in a row, Prairie View A&M had the chance to come out victorious in a pivotal conference game on the road, and for the second straight contest the Panthers fell just short.
The Panthers dropped a 61-58 game to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night, and for the second-consecutive game it happened in heartbreaking fashion.
Riding a one-minute, 6-0 run the Panthers forged a comeback in the final two minutes of the game.
Jourdan DeMuynck made four consecutive free throws to cut a 59-54 deficit down to a 59-58 disadvantage with 1:09 left in the game.
Prairie View A&M forced Arkansas-Pine Bluff into a turnover with 1:03 left in the game, as sophomore forward
Demondre Chapman stole the ball and gave the Panthers a chance to take the lead. However, as Prairie View was running its offense a hand off between guards
Ryan Gesiakowski and
Louis Munks was mishandled and the Panthers turned it over with 35.2 seconds left.
All Arkansas-Pine Bluff had to do was to hold the ball and wait until Prairie View commited the foul to stop the clock, but in a mental lapse Golden Lions guard Clay Johnson went for a layup when he saw the lane open up after the inbounds play and missed the layup. This allowed Chapman to pull down the rebound and give the Panthers a chance to win it.
On the next possession, DeMuynck drove the lane and drew a shooting foul with his team trailing UAPB 59-58, but he missed both free throws with 19 seconds on the clock. Forced to foul to extend the game, the Panthers sent Mitchell Anderson to the line where he made his two shots to give the Golden Lions a 61-58 lead with 18 seconds left.
On the final possession, Munks had an isolation play and took a three-point shot that missed the mark as time expired. Prairie View dropped to 11-16 with a 7-7 record in SWAC play. Munks finished with 10 points while Gesiakowski had a team-high 16 points for the Panthers. Prairie View A&M had trouble containing Anderson, who scored a game-high 24 points and added 15 rebounds in a winning effort.
The Panthers will play host to Alabama A&M at 5 p.m. Saturday in the William Nicks Building.
