GAME TWO BOX SCORE
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Prairie View A&M softball split its second consecutive doubleheader on Wednesday evening as they traveled to the campus of Sam Houston State. The Lady Panthers fell 11-0 in the opener but bounced back in the nightcap to log a 7-3 victory. The win over Sam Houston marked the first in series history and the most runs scored against the Kats.
The Lady Panthers (2-2) made history in the second game as a six-run, sixth inning helped them overcome a one-run deficit en route to a 7-3 win.
Sam Houston State took an early 1-0 lead after two innings of action and added another run in the fourth for a 2-0 margin. Prairie View A&M began to apply pressure offensively in the fifth as senior Jasmin Littles drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second following freshman Olivia Pace's sacrifice bunt. A one-out single from sophomore Katelyn Den Beste led to a Sam Houston State pitching change which didn't affect the Lady Panthers as freshman Druscilla Marmolejo walked to load the bases. Sophomore Leanna Flores cut PV's deficit in half as her one-out RBI drew PV to within 2-1.
With one out in the sixth, the Lady Panthers took advantage of several Sam Houston mishaps as pinch runner Brittanie Gardner tied the game at 2-all on an SHSU error. PV's chances dwindled following the run after a strikeout but another SHSU error led to a 3-2 PV lead after freshman Alisa Navarro crossed home. Once again, Flores came up big as the California native logged a two-RBI single for a 5-2 margin. Freshman Shontel Lopez drove in PV's sixth run of the evening with an RBI single followed by sophomore Sarina Rios' bases-loaded walk for a 7-2 advantage. The Kats added a run in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little too late as PV won for the first time in 34 tries against Sam Houston State.
Flores led the way with three RBIs, Littles scored twice while Den Beste and Lopez had two hits apiece. Sophomore pitcher Cally Falls picked up her first career win as she struck out four in a complete-game effort.
Sam Houston State scored 11 runs in the first three innings of action as they cruised to an 11-0 win in the opener. The Kats crossed home two runs in the first before exploding for five runs in the second followed by four in the third. Prairie View A&M never got on track offensively as they were held to only two hits. On the mound, Lauren Grun dropped to 0-1 on the season before being relieved by Gardner.
PV returns to action next Tuesday afternoon in Houston as they'll battle SWAC rival TSU at 3 p.m. The contest will be played at the Memorial Park Softball Field. Memorial Park is located at 6501 Memorial Drive, near the I-10 & I-610 West Loop intersection.
