BOX SCORE
In a script opposite of their first game against Alabama A&M, Prairie View A&M found themselves on the victorious end of a furious second half rally as they overcame a huge deficit to the Bulldogs in a 60-52 victory on Saturday night in the William Nicks Building.
Alabama A&M set the tone early as Demarquelle Tabb opened the contest with an emphatic dunk off the opening tip. Prairie View A&M's Jules Montgomery tied the contest at 2-all after hitting a jumper but it was all AAMU from that point as the Bulldogs broke the game open with a 22-6 surge for a 24-8 lead at the 11:45 mark. During the surge, everything went wrong for the Panthers as they committed four turnovers and shot 1-for-8 from the field.
A brief 5-0 scoring run cut PV's deficit to 24-13 two minutes later as sophomore Demondre Chapman and freshman Jimmie Duplessis hit consecutive baskets. Alabama A&M upped its lead back to 14 following a three-point play from Tabb and remained at that margin during a five-minute stretch in the half. However, the Panthers began to show signs of life as they held the Bulldogs scoreless during a 7-0 run to close out the half down 33-26.
Both teams struggled with their shooting as the second half began but Alabama A&M managed to lead by 10 with 12:04 remaining. Down by 10, the light came on for the Panthers as they went on a 12-4 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to trail 43-42 at the 8:51 mark. The Bulldogs refused to give up ground as they upped their margin to five (48-43) with 6:09 remaining but PV kept on fighting as Jourdan DeMuynck picked the perfect time to hit his first field goal of the night as PV trailed 50-49 with 4:38 left on the clock.
Alabama A&M's Casey Cantey scored a layup on the following possession but PV's Louis Munks tied the game at 53-all on a trey with 3:53 left. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next play and Munks gave PV its first lead (54-52) of the night with two free throws. From that point, the Panthers turned it on defensively as they held AAMU scoreless for the remainder of the game while putting together an 8-0 run to seal the win.
Munks led the Panthers with 14 points and five rebounds while Mayol Riathin put forth a solid effort with nine points and nine rebounds. DeMuynck followed with 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
The Panthers return to action on Monday night as they'll close out the home portion of the schedule against Alabama State at 7:30 p.m.
