Softball Drops Doubleheader To TSU In Contrasting Fashions

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

HOUSTON – Texas Southern swept a non-conference doubleheader over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Park as they won 8-3 and 2-1.

In a contest which featured a combined 27 hits, TSU used a pair of three-run innings to claim an 8-3 win in the opener.

Prairie View struck first in the opening inning as Leanna Flores doubled in leadoff batter Cally Falls for an early 1-0 lead. TSU responded with a three-run homer from Tenesha Skrine in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-1 and upped their advantage to 4-1 after two on Yesenia Torres' RBI.

The Lady Panthers inched back into the contest with a pair of RBIs from Shontel Lopez and Katelyn Den Beste in the third and fourth frames to close within 4-3. However, TSU broke the game open with four runs over the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win.

Freshman Nicole Gallardo fell to 1-1 on the season as she saw 4.2 innings of action on the mound. TSU's JoAnn Herrera earned the win as she went the distance. Offensively, Flores and Lopez led PV with three hits each while Monica Castillo recorded four hits for TSU.

Game two belonged to the pitchers as PV's Cally Falls and TSU's Rebecca Villarreal kept both teams off-balanced. However, TSU crossed home runs in the fourth and fifth innings and held off a seventh-inning PV rally for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

TSU scored the game's first run in the fourth as Sammantha Jiminez singled home pinch runner Amber Peters for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Panthers had a scoring opportunity in the fifth as Kelly Scruggs reached third but TSU got out of the jam as Villarreal forced Den Beste into an inning-ending groundout.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth as Katel Stanonik recorded a sacrifice fly which brought home Jessica Miller. After a scoreless sixth from both teams, PV made things interesting in the seventh as Jasmin Littles led the inning off with a full count, leadoff single. Villarreal quickly recorded two consecutive outs but freshman Olivia Pace singled followed by Den Beste's two-out RBI double. Freshman Druscilla Marmolejo hit a shot to left center but TSU's Monica Castillo made a diving catch to end the game.

Falls struck out six as she fell to 1-1 on the season while Den Beste, Flores, Littles, Pace and Scruggs logged one hit apiece.

PV returns to action this Friday as they'll travel to Austin, Texas for a 3 p.m. Matchup versus Huston-Tillotson.
