The Prairie View A&M men and women's tennis teams have a full-schedule of matches on their plate.
The men kick off their Prairie View A&M Invitational Thursday with a 2 p.m. match against Louisiana-Lafayette and finish it Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Bethany College. The women take on Xavier at 3 p.m. Friday at home and host Lamar at noon on Sunday.
The Lady Panthers are fresh off of a road trip to Abilene in which they picked up their first team victory of the season against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Lady Panthers dominated Kingsville, sweeping all six of the singles matches and three doubles matches for the 7-0 win on Friday, Feb. 3.
“
Brittany Harrell set the pace at the No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win,” Head coach
John Cochran said. “Then we just coasted from there. They were never really a threat to beat us. Then we played a nationally ranked Abilene Christian team. We came out strong we just didn't finish well enough to put any pressure on them.”
Against the No. 1 ranked Division II team in the country Prairie View A&M suffered a 7-0 defeat, despite strong play by
Brittany Harrell, Alejandra Berrera and
Alix Thomas, who each lost their matches 6-3, 6-3. In a short turnaround and with little rest, the Lady Panthers lost to Sam Houston State 7-0 in afternoon matches that same day to fall to 1-4 on the season.
Cochran said he knows the women and men face tough opponents with their weekend lineup, but he expects them to challenge and be competitive.
