GAME TWO BOX SCORE

AUSTIN, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team captured its first doubleheader of the season with a pair of wins over Huston-Tillotson on Friday afternoon. The Lady Panthers won the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 8-6.

Freshman Shontel Lopez finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs as Prairie View A&M defeated HTU 4-2 in the opener.

The Lady Panthers scored in the third inning as leadoff batter Cally Falls singled and advanced to second after a passed ball. Two batters later, sophomore Leanna Flores singled home the game's first run to right field and was rewarded for her efforts after Lopez recorded an RBI-double.

The lead was brief however as HTU's Meagan Alvarez hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third to knot the contest at 2-all.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Panthers began to heat up as Katelyn Den Beste drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position after a throwing error allowed Flores to reach base. Once again, Lopez made HTU pay with a shot to the right field fence which led to the eventual winning runs.

Playing against her former team, Prairie View A&M pitcher Valeria Uranga had a solid debut as she struck out five batters. Lopez finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs while Flores finished with a pair of hits.

After a slow start in the opener, the bats came alive for the Lady Panthers in game two as they pounded out 12 hits in an 8-6 victory.

PV wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as third baseman Kelly Scruggs drew a bases loaded walk for the game's first run in the top of the first. A sacrifice fly from Brittanie Gardner upped the score to 2-0 while Sarina Rios closed out the scoring with an RBI off an HTU error.

After a scoreless second, PV returned to the scoreboard in the third as Scruggs led the inning off with a triple to left center. Gardner picked up her second RBI of the evening with a single to left center while Druscilla Marmolejo drove in the team's fifth run after an RBI double.

After a three-run PV sixth, Huston Tillotson tried to make things interesting as they clawed to within two runs in the bottom of the seventh after an inside-the-park home run and a single. As a result, PV head coach Vernon Bland went to his bullpen and inserted freshman Meah Maddox with the game on the line. Maddox was too much for the Rams as she struck out two of the final three batters for her first career save.

The Lady Panthers return to action on Monday, March 12 as they'll begin a three-game road trip at Texas College at 3 p.m. in Tyler, Texas.
