Softball Moves To The Top Of The SWAC West Standings

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther softball team split a quartet of games this weekend at the SWAC Round-up in Hattiesburg, Miss.  As a result of the round-up, the Lady Panthers are in first place in the SWAC West entering the start of divisional play this weekend in Baton Rouge, La.

Prairie View A&M 4, Alabama A&M 3
In game one, junior pitcher Brittanie Gardner struck out 11 batters as PV scored in the 10th to defeat Alabama A&M 4-3 in the opener on Saturday.

Alabama A&M jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third before PV answered with three runs of its own in the bottom frame for a 3-3 tie.  Both teams went scoreless all way until the 10th as Leanna Flores sacrificed over Olivia Pace to third.  Shontel Lopez hit a sacrifice fly on the next play to end the game as Pace scored the game-winning run.

Leadoff batter Cally Falls and Lopez led PV with a pair of hits while Lopez and Flores drove in two RBIs apiece.


Alabama State 12, Prairie View A&M 2
Alabama State pounded out 20 hits and used a pair of big innings late in the game for a 12-2 win.

ASU led 3-0 in the top of the first before PV answered with a run as Jasmine Littles drew a bases loaded walk.  ASU upped its led to 5-1 in the second but PV narrowed its deficit to 5-2 in the bottom frame as Alisa Navarro scored from third while ASU attempted to throw out Druscilla Marmolejo.  However, the scoring would cease for the Lady Panthers as ASU scored seven runs over the final four innings to break the game open.

Falls tallied two hits for the Panthers with Littles recording the lone RBI.   Meah Maddox was tagged with the loss as she lasted 1.1 innings.


Mississippi Valley State 6, Prairie View A&M 0
Mississippi Valley State scored five runs in the fourth to break open a scoreless game as the Devilettes claimed a 6-0 advantage.

With one out in the fourth, MVSU reached based on an error and the floodgates opened from there as they scored five runs on three hits.  PV had its chances to score with a runner reaching third in the fifth and sixth but couldn't make the timely hit when needed.

The Lady Panthers struggled at the plate with only two hits the entire game.  Falls picked up the loss as she allowed six runs in 4.1 innings of work.


Prairie View A&M 2, Alcorn State 0
After a rough outing, Falls redeemed herself on the mound as she pitched a three-hit shutout while Shontel Lopez drove in two RBIs en route to a 2-0 win over on Sunday.

Brittanie Gardner singled to open the third frame, stole second and advanced to third on Flores' sacrifice bunt.  Gardner scored the game's first run on a sac fly from Lopez as the Lady Panthers claimed a 1-0 advantage.

In the fifth, Olivia Pace hit a leadoff single and moved to second on Gardner's sacrifice bunt.  An ASU throwing error moved Pace to third which paved the way for Lopez to drive in the insurance run.

Pace and Falls led the Lady Panthers with two hits apiece while Lopez drove in two RBIs.  Falls struck out five and only allowed three hits.

The Lady Panthers return to action this weekend as they'll travel to Southern in Baton Rouge, La. for a three-game showdown beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
