Softball Splits Doubleheader With Houston Baptist

GAME ONE BOX SCORE

GAME TWO BOX SCORE

HOUSTON - Prairie View A&M split a hard-fought road doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Houston Baptist as the Lady Panthers won the opener 5-4 before dropping the nightcap 4-2.

In game one, freshman Alisa Navarro came up big once again in the final inning as her RBI single to left in the seventh scored the go-ahead run for a 5-4 Lady Panther victory.

The Lady Panthers jumped ahead 3-0 after two innings of play as freshman Druscilla Marmolejo recorded a two-RBI double followed by Jasmine Littles' RBI which scored Marmolejo.  HBU knotted the contest at 3-all in the fourth on a three-run homer from Melissa Herman and moved ahead 4-3 in the fifth after successfully stealing home.

Prairie View A&M fought back in the sixth as Littles evened the game with a solo homer that just cleared the left field wall for a 4-4 margin.  With one out in the seventh, sophomore Kelly Scruggs hit a double to left and advanced to third following sophomore Sarina Rio's bunt.  Navarro came up to the plate and fought off a variety of pitches en route to her RBI single for a 5-4 PV margin.

Holding a one-run lead, the Lady Panthers had to fight off HBU in the bottom frame as two runners reached base due to an error and walk with two outs.  However, freshman pitcher Nicole Gallardo got out the jam and forced the game-ending grounder to third for the final out.

Scruggs finished 4-for-4 while Cally Falls, Littles and Leanna Flores had two hits apiece.  Littles and Marmolejo also tied for the team lead with two RBIs.  Gallardo improved to 4-3 on the mound as she struck out four.

In game two, HBU crossed home two runs in the fifth and held off a last-inning PV rally to claim the nightcap 4-2.

HBU scored the game's opening run in the first off an RBI single but PV moved ahead 2-1 in the second as Lauren Patterson's bases-loaded RBI single just got over the glove of the HBU second baseman followed by Cally Falls' RBI single to left.

The Huskies knotted the contest at 2-all in the third and added two more in the fifth to break the tie as two Lady Panther fielding errors led to the 4-2 deficit.  In the seventh, the Lady Panthers made things interesting as freshmen Olivia Pace and Shontel Lopez hit back-to-back singles.  However, the rally and game came to an end as the HBU left fielder made an aggressive play in the outfield to prevent Cally Falls from reaching first and scoring at least one run.

Meah Maddox fell to 2-2 on the season after pitching 4.1 innings while Falls and Patterson both drove in an RBI.

The Lady Panthers return to play on Friday as they travel to Pine Bluff, Ark. to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m.
