Sam Houston State swept a non-conference doubleheader over Prairie View A&M on Wednesday by margins of 3-0 and 9-0.
In game one, Sam Houston State hit a leadoff home run and held off several PV scoring attempts for a 3-0 win in the opener.
SHSU leadoff batter Tori Benavidez opened the game with a leadoff home run for an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Panthers attempted to tie the game in the bottom frame but fell short as Cally Falls was thrown out at home on Shontel Lopez's two-out hit. Prairie View's deficit increased to 2-0 in the third as SHSU's Sarah Allison recorded an RBI double. Sam Houston State scored the game's final run in the fourth on Alyssa Gregg's RBI single which brought in Shelbi Tucker.
Brittanie Gardner was tagged with the loss while Leanna Flores, Lopez and Alisa Navarro recorded one hit apiece.
A six-run second inning by Sam Houston State opened the floodgates as they swept the doubleheader in five innings by a 9-0 margin.
A two-out error by Prairie View A&M allowed SHSU to cross two runs home for an early 2-0 lead in the first. SHSU broke the game open in the second with a six-run frame for an 8-0 lead before closing out the scoring with another run in the fourth for the final margin.
Freshman pitcher Nicole Gallardo fell to 5-4 on the season after pitching 1.2 innings. First baseman Sarina Rios, second baseman Katelyn Den Beste and Navarro each had a hit for the Lady Panthers.
PV returns to SWAC action on Friday afternoon with a huge divisional showdown that has championship implications against Texas Southern at 3 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
