Softball Combines For 26 Hits In Doubleheader Sweep Over Langston

The Prairie View A&M softball team continued its winning ways as the swept a doubleheader over Langston on Monday afternoon in Prairie View.  The Lady Panthers dominated the opener 12-0 before rallying to win 6-4 in the series finale.

Lauren Grun and Shontel Lopez combined for nine RBIs while freshman pitcher Meah Maddox threw a two-hit shutout as PV run-ruled Langston 12-0 in five innings of action in the opener.

Freshman Shontel Lopez continued her hot streak with a two-run homer over the outfield wall for an early 2-0 advantage in the first. In the second inning, the lead increased to 3-0 as freshman Druscilla Marmolejo doubled home fellow freshman Olivia Pace from first. The lead grew to 5-0 in the third as Lauren Grun doubled home junior Kelly Scruggs from second followed by an RBI single from Pace which scored freshman Alissa Navarro.

Prairie View's bats remained red hot in the fourth as sophomore Leanna Flores upped the margin to 6-0 with an RBI single to the left field fence. A dropped fly ball in the outfield by Langston allowed PV to add two more runs immediately thereafter as sophomore Cally Falls and Flores crossed home for an 8-0 advantage. Three batters later, PV added an exclamation point as Grun cleared the bases after hitting a grand slam over the center field wall for the final margin of 12-0.

Falls finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Grun drove in five RBIs followed by four from Lopez.

Freshman Druscilla Marmolejo's two-run homer in the sixth was the shot in the arm Prairie View A&M needed as they rallied for a 6-4 victory in game two.

Langston scored twice to open the first inning but PV trimmed its deficit to 2-1 as Falls scored from second after a Langston fielding error. The Lady Lions crossed home a pair of runs in the third for a 4-1 lead but once again, PV responded as Kiera Bridges drove in Lopez en route to a 4-2 deficit. In the fifth, Bridges came up big once again as she cut Langston's lead to 4-3 after a solo homer over the right field fence.

PV turned to the long ball once again in the sixth as Marmolejo gave PV its first lead (5-4) of the game after hitting a two-run homer off an 0-2 count. Two batters later, Lopez doubled to the outfield wall and courtesy runner Karrion Patterson scored PV's final run of the evening on Kelly Scruggs' RBI single.

Bridges, Falls and Lopez tallied two hits each for the Lady Panthers with Bridges and Marmolejo accounting for a pair of RBIs.  Freshman Nicole Gallardo came on in relief and picked up her second win of the season on the mound.

PV returns to action on Friday as they host Grambling State in Prairie View beginning at 3 p.m.
