BOX SCORE
Sophomore Cally Falls pitched her first career no-hitter and had a solid day at the plate with a team-high two hits as Prairie View A&M opened up its second SWAC West softball series with a 3-0 win over Grambling State on Friday.
It was a pitcher's duel between Falls and Grambling's Angela Perez for most of the game as hits were hard to come by for both teams until the bottom of the fifth for the Lady Panthers. With the score tied at 0-0 and one out, freshman Druscilla Marmolejo, Falls and senior Jasmine Littles hit three consecutive singles to load the bases. Sophomore Leanna Flores hit a shot back to the pitcher and it appeared Marmolejo was going to be out at home due to the force. However, Grambling's catcher dropped the ball on the throw which allowed Marmolejo to score for an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Shontel Lopez upped the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single on the next at-bat and a wild pitch allowed Littles to score from third for a 3-0 margin.
That was all the offense Falls needed from that point as the Needville, Texas native stymied the Lady Tiger offense all game long.
Falls improved to 5-3 on the season after recording six strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate while Flores and Littles recorded an RBI apiece.
The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader that's slated to begin at noon in Prairie View. Game two of the doubleheader can be heard live on the Internet at www.KTORRADIO.com.
