The men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 match to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon but saw competitive doubles play from the No. 1 and No. 2 teams.
The duo of
Trenton Johnson and
Juan Pablo Robles defeated Aurelien Tave and Fernando Llorens of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in an 8-4 decision. Johnson and Robles jumped out early on their opponents and stood their ground.
“They (Johnson and Robles) jumped out to a big lead and held on to it,” Prairie View A&M tennis coach
John Cochran said. “The No. 1 also got out to a lead, but they just sort of lost their mojo. It went from 3-2 us to 4-3 them.”
The No. 1 team of
Kristen Powell and
Ronald Chidzikwe for Prairie View A&M lost 8-3 to Peter Nagy and Gergo Weidinger. The Panthers' No. 3 team also dropped its match as Prairie View A&M lost the doubles point.
Singles play was a struggle for the Panthers as they couldn't manage to steal one set from the Islanders in dual match competition.
“We came out strong in the singles, but we just couldn't sustain,” Cochran said. “They were just the better team today and we didn't show any patience.”
Prairie View A&M dropped to 5-15 after the loss and will look to bounce back by continuing its dominance against SWAC Opponents in the SWAC Championship Tournament on Friday, April 20 in Alexandria, La. The Panthers are 4-1 against conference competition.
