BOX SCORE
Four players scored in double figures as Prairie View A&M picked up its first SWAC winning streak of the season in a 73-59 win over Jackson State before a nationally televised ESPNU audience in the William Nicks Building on Monday.
With the contest featured on ESPNU, there wasn't a shortage of ESPN's Top 10 Plays highlights as both teams attacked the paint ferociously in the first half. After five ties in the half, the intensity began to pick up on both sides as PV's Josh Eleby dunked home a basket for a 22-20 lead at the 4:52 mark.
Both teams turned the ball over on ensuing possessions before JSU's Dundrecous Nelson nailed a trey followed by Sydney Coleman's dunk 50 seconds later as the Tigers claimed a 25-22 advantage with 3:33 remaining. Prairie View's Montrael Scott hit a jumper to reclaim the lead but Nelson once again was a thorn in PV's side off the bench as his jumper moved JSU back on top 27-24 at the two-minute mark.
From that point, it was a dunkfest as Demondre Chapman dunked home a Carl Blair assist for a 28-27 led but JSU's Derrell Taylor responded with a thundering dunk of his own in which he was whistled for a technical foul following the basket despite him drawing a foul.
After Taylor's three-point play, which gave JSU a 30-29 lead, Eleby responded with another dunk from Blair's pass which sent the crowd into a frenzy in addition to a 31-30 Panther lead with 43 ticks left. However, Nelson moved JSU back ahead on the next possession with a jumper and the lead held as JSU led 32-31 at halftime.
The Panthers came out of the tunnel in the second stanza full of energy as they outscored JSU 6-0 to open the half behind baskets from Jourdan DeMuynck, Blair and Scott en route to a 37-32 lead slightly beyond the two-minute mark. JSU tied the contest at 37-all with five quick points but DeMuynck nailed a trey for a 40-37 PV margin 27 seconds later. Prairie View A&M went quiet offensively over the next few minutes as JSU crept back into the game and reclaimed a 42-40 lead after a three-point play the old-fashioned way from Nelson at the 11:57 mark.
One of the top rebounding teams in the SWAC, the Panthers went to work on the boards as reserve forward Patrick Agho rebounded a missed basket from senior guard Ryan Gesiakowski's three-point attempt and was fouled on the putback. Agho ended PV's four-minute scoring drought by converting two free throws and knotted the game for the eighth time at 42-all with 11:39 remaining. Both teams went back-and-forth and were tied for the ninth time (44-44) one minute later until an 8-0 run by the Panthers broke the game open as DeMuynck scored five points during that span to create the much-needed cushion.
JSU would not go away though as Christian Williams nailed three free throws followed by Nelson's putback to draw within 52-49 with 6:57 left. DeMuynck answered with a big three-pointer on the following possession and began a 12-4 surge over the next four-and-a-half minutes which extended PV's lead from six points to 11 points at 64-53 with 2:08 left. Jackson State closed to nine points five seconds later but PV upped its lead to 13 (68-55) nearly a minute later and never looked back as they swept its weekend swing and picked up its first home win over Jackson State since 2009.
DeMuynck led PV with 22 points and six rebounds while Montgomery added 15 points and eight boards (six offensive). Eleby scored 11 points and blocked three shots followed by 10 points from Scott and an eight-assist, five rebound effort from Blair.
Nelson led JSU off the bench with 24 points, four assists and three steals.
The Panthers will travel to Itta Bena, Miss. on Saturday, Jan. 19 for a 5 p.m. showdown with the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
