Lady Panthers Stunned In Loss To UAPB

BOX SCORE
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - On a night where shots would not fall from the field or from the foul line, Prairie View A&M suffered a shocking 57-50 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night on the road in the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

The Lady Panthers struggled from the field and from the free-throw line in critical moments late in the second half as UAPB started to heat up en route to its first win against Prairie View A&M since Feb. 20, 2010 and its first win over PV with coach Toyelle Wilson at the helm.

After being tied 23-23 at the end of the first half, the Lady Panthers started the second half out on a 15-5 run, taking a 38-28 lead with 13:41 left in the game on a Jeanette Jackson layup. Jackson, in her first game off the bench, scored a team-high 12 points for Prairie View A&M.

UAPB countered with a 15-5 run of its own and tied the game at 43 on two free throws by Cassidy Wright with 6:26 left. However, down the final stretch of four minutes in a closely contested game, the Lady Panthers went 3-for-6 on potential game-tying free-throws or free throws to take the lead. They also went 0-for-5 from the field and had three turnovers. Prairie View A&M shot 33 percent from the field and (18-34) 52 percent from the foul line in the loss.

Prairie View A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff were in a dead-heat at the half. With the absence of the SWAC's leading scorer and rebounder Latia Williams, the Lady Panthers turned to redshirt freshman guard Gabrielle Scott to pick up the scoring load. Scott led all first-half scorers with six points and finished with eight.

JaQuandria Williams added four points, six rebounds and two steals for the Lady Panthers in the first half. JaQuandria Williams finished with nine points, a game-high 13 rebounds and five steals. Both teams turned in sub-par shooting performances in the first half. The Lady Panthers were held to 30.8 percent from the field, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 31.8 percent.

The Lady Panthers will try to bounce back at home in the William Nicks Building as they'll host Alabama State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 and then host Alabama A&M at 5:30 p.m. on Monday Jan. 28.
