The Prairie View A&M Panthers close out the first half of SWAC play on Monday night with a matchup versus Alabama A&M at 7:30 p.m. in the William Nicks Building. The contest will be shown live on PANTHERVISION and also broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM. The Department of Athletics also encouarges all individuals affiliated with Greek and non-greek letter organizations to show up in their apparel.
Prairie View A&M ended its two-game slide in thrilling fashion as they held off a late charge by Alabama State for a 74-72 win on Saturday night as four players scored in double figures. Senior point guard Carl Blair had a career night as he finished one rebound short of a triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Senior guard Jourdan DeMuynck followed with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Josh Eleby tallied 10 points and nine rebounds. Jules Montgomery also had a strong game with 14 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot.
Despite a 3-5 league mark at this point, the Panthers have been outstanding on the boards at creating second-chance opportunities for themselves as they outrebounded Alabama State 55-39 on Saturday night. Amongst SWAC teams, PV ranks first in rebound offense (40.8), rebound margin (+4.5), offensive rebounds (15.5) and offensive rebound percentage (.380). The Panthers are ranked second in rebounding defense (36.3) and defensive rebounds (25.3).
DeMuynck leads the Panthers with 14.3 points per game and is pulling down a team-high 6.3 rebounds per outing. Blair follows with 10.6 points and a team-high 5.2 assists.
Led by second year head coach Willie Hayes, AAMU is coming off an 89-56 loss to TSU on Saturday and has dropped 5-of-6 since Jan. 12. Junior guard/forward Demarquelle Tabb leads AAMU with 13.6 points per game and is the SWAC's top rebounder with 9.3 boards per outing. Guard Jeremy Crutcher follows with 11.7 points and ranks third in the SWAC with 5.1 assists.
Since the series began in 1999, Alabama A&M has dominated the Panthers with a 21-8 overall record. However, the Panthers have made up some ground as PV head coach Byron Rimm II is 4-8 lifetime versus Alabama A&M with one win each in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Rimm is 21-1 in the dome versus non-conference foes and 34-23 against SWAC opponents.
Prairie View A&M begins round two of SWAC play on Saturday night as they'll travel to Texas Southern for a SWAC showdown at 7:30 p.m. in the HP&E Arena.
