The only two coaches to lead the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team to NCAA Tournament appearances in program history will face off at 5 p.m. on Sunday as Toyelle Wilson and the Lady Panthers will host Texas Southern and former Prairie View A&M head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke in the William Nicks Building. For those that can't make the game, the contest will be broadcast live on KPVU 91.3 and streamed free and in HD on the new SWAC Digital Network.
The Lady Panthers enter the contest hungry for a win after suffering a 60-55 loss at Southern on Friday night. Junior guard LaReahn Washington scored a career-high 14 points and grabbed six boards in the loss, while senior forward Latia Williams picked up her fourth double-double of the season with a 12-point, 16-rebound performance.
Both teams enter the game with a 1-1 SWAC record as each team beat Alcorn State and lost to Southern in their conference-opening road trip. Prairie View A&M is 4-0 against Texas Southern under the watch of Wilson, but Texas Southern leads the all-time series 32-29. Wilson and the Lady Panthers will try to keep her two-year win streak intact against Texas Southern.
“We're going to prepare for Texas Southern just like we prepared for the other 14 teams we played this year,” Wilson said. “We're going to try to execute. We want to stop what they want to do, and put the ball in the basket.”
Williams, the SWAC's leading scorer at 13.8 points and its leading rebounder, looks to give Prairie View A&M the advantage in the team's first home game of the SWAC season.
Prairie View A&M will try to slow down Gianne Fleming (11.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Te'era Williams (9.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg), who are the top scorers for the Lady Tigers. The game will be broadcasted live and for free and in HD on the new SWAC Digital Network.
The Lady Panthers have a few days rest after playing three games in five days. Their next contest isn't until Jan. 12 as they'll host Grambling State in a 3 p.m. game in the Baby Dome.
