In a game plagued by turnovers at inopportune times, Prairie View A&M seemed to beat itself in a 64-57 loss to Texas Southern on Sunday night in the William Nicks Building.

The Lady Panthers overcame a rough first half of shooting, which included a 27 percent showing from the field and just 20 points in the first period, fighting back in the second half on the shoulders of redshirt freshman Gabrielle Scott and senior forward Latia Williams. Scott scored 11of her team-high 16 points in the second half as the Lady Panthers tried to claw back into the game from a 32-20 halftime deficit. They started the half out on a seven-minute, 18-6 run that was capped off by a Williams jumper with 13:19 left to cut TSU's lead to 38-37. Texas Southern responded with a Kayla West layup, but then Williams struck again with another mid-range jumper with 11:44 left to pull her team to within one point again at 40-39.

However, five Lady Panthers turnovers in a four-minute span led to 10-3 run for TSU, which was capped off by a West fast break layup with 6:58 on the clock. Prairie View A&M climbed to within five points when senior guard Kiara Etienne hit a jumper to cut her team's deficit to 60-55 with 1:06 left, but the Lady Tigers held on for the win in the Baby Dome.

“We didn't take good care of the ball,” Prairie View A&M coach Toyelle Wilson said. “Between our point guards we had 12 turnovers. We've got to fix a lot of things. We got to get back to the drawing board and the girls have got to get better.”

Williams recorded her second-consecutive double-double and her fifth of the season in the loss, finishing with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Etienne provided 12 points and two steals for the Lady Panthers, while sophomore center Larissa Scott recorded eight points and grabbed 15 boards.

In the the defeat, the Lady Panthers had their seven-year winning streak over TSU snapped. The last time the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team suffered a loss to the Lady Tigers was on Jan. 8, 2005 in a 65-54 game in Houston. West played a major role in TSU's win, scoring a game-high 24 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field.
