BOX SCORE
Prairie View A&M continued its run in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 2-0 over Arkanas-Pine Bluff on Friday night at the PV Soccer Field, extending its streak of holding opponents scoreless to four games.
The Lady Panthers went on top in the eighth minute as junior midfielder Katherine Sheppard scored her second goal of the season off of a deflection and an assist from midfielder Celene Batrez to take the 1-0 lead. Junior defender Debbie Arguelles also got in the action with a goal in the 64th minute. Junior midfielder Melissa Kalbfleisch manufactured the pass on a corner kick and Arguelles scored the goal off of a header.
Junior keeper Bianca Garza improved to 3-0-1, recording two saves and her fourth-consecutive shutout in the process. The Lady Panthers are 5-1-1 in their last seven games, including a 2-1-1 SWAC record. Their 2-0 loss at Southern on Oct. 6 came with midfielder Reina Mata playing at goalie out of necessity following a season-ending injury to sophomore goal keeper Dominique Dillon in the first minute of the match. With an actual goal keeper (as designated by the roster) in front of the net and directing the defense, Prairie View A&M has not allowed a goal Sept. 15.
Even more impressive is the Lady Panthers scoring margin. Since their 2-0 win over Howard on Sept. 22, the team has outscored opponents 19-2. Prairie View A&M will host Grambling State on Sunday in its regular season finale at 1 p.m. on the soccer field.
