Lady Panthers Soccer Takes Out Jackson State

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M defeated Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent Jackson State 1-0 on Friday in Jackson, Miss. to string together two-consecutive wins for the first time since the 2012 season.

The Lady Panthers jumped out on Jackson State early thanks to a goal in the eighth minute by junior midfielder Ivana Ramirez. She sent a cross in front of the goal, and it deflected off of a defender to hit the back of the net. Ramirez was given credit for the goal.

Prairie View went on to play a full match of shut out soccer. Jackson State actually out-shot the Lady Panthers 15-to-7, but Prairie View A&M was more accurate with its shots, with six shots on goal compared to seven by the Lady Tigers. Dominique Dillon, the defending SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week, recorded her second-consecutive shutout to improve to 2-4 on the season. She had seven saves in the win.

Lady Panthers head coach Abe Garcia said attacking midfielder Celene Batrez set the pace for the team offensively, and defender Nahuacali Romo-Lara disrupted the Jackson State Attack. He's looking forward to what the two-game win streak can do for the confidence of a win-hungry team.

"It's good to get these wins," Garcia said. "It gives us an extra boost. We just need to continue prepare, and our goal is continue this success."

Prairie View A&M ends its weekend road trip on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Southern in Baton Rouge, La.
