PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Demondre Chapman tallied a career-high 30 points while
Montrael Scott recorded a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds as Prairie View A&M picked up a 100-73 victory over Schreiner University on Monday night.
The Panthers wasted no time in setting the tone as they jumped out to a 14-3 lead less than five minutes in. Schreiner's AJ Myres shot the Mountaineers (0-1) back into the contest with a pair of treys to key a 12-3 run over the next four minutes but the Panthers responded and pushed the lead back to 23-15 after baskets from Patrick Agho and Scott.
Schreiner closed to within 23-19 several minutes later but the Panthers exploded for a 22-9 surge to end the half as Chapman led the Panthers with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
The Panthers led comfortably to begin the second stanza as Scott and Chapman helped push the lead to 17 at 53-36 with 15:41 remaining. However, the Mountaineers continued to hang around as they put forth a 15-6 run over the next four minutes to close within eight points at 59-51. A tip-in by Scott extended PV's lead to 10 on the ensuing possession and began an all-around surge which saw solid play on both ends of the court.
The Panthers began to execute on the defensive end as Reggis Onwukamuche and Karim York recorded a pair of blocks in addition to a pair of trey balls from Hershey Robinson for a comfortable 76-56 margin at the 7:54 mark. Prairie View A&M kept the pressure on as Chapman and Scott helped push to the lead to 28 points three minutes later which paved the way for York to guide PV over the century mark with a pair of three-pointers in the final 1:44.
Chapman led the Panthers with a career-high 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting followed by 19 points and 10 boards from Scott. York tallied 15 points and eight rebounds while Louis Munks chipped in with 10 points and three steals. As a team, the Panthers shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
The Panthers return to action this Thursday for a non-conference match-up versus Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
