BOX SCORE
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M lost a hard-fought contest to Sam Houston State on Thursday in double overtime as the Bearkats squeaked out a 108-103 win in the Baby Dome.

The Panthers put forth a solid effort to open the first half as they jumped out to a 19-10 lead less than nine minutes in as junior guard Montrael Scott led the way with 10 points.  The Bearkats clawed to within four points after baskets from Will Bond and Jabari Peters but the Panthers regrouped and kept Sam Houston State at bay as the lead increased to 34-25 following a steal and layup by Scott.  However, the Panthers had a letdown towards the closing minutes of the half as SHSU put forth an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to knot the contest at 36-all.  Sophomore post Karim York broke the spell with a trey to break the tie followed by another basket from Scott to pull PVAMU's lead up to five at 41-36 with 1:13 left.  The Panthers would hold on and claim a 41-38 halftime margin as Scott and York were on fire as they combined for 38 of the team's 41 first half points.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair with a combined nine lead changes and 10 ties as neither squad would lead by more than four points.  With 3:25 remaining and SHSU up 74-73, SHSU outscored the Panthers 5-2 to go up by four with 1:42 left until junior guard Tre Hagood trimmed PVAMU's deficit to 79-78 with a three-point play the old-fashioned way.

SHSU's Paul Baxter answered with a layup on the ensuing possession for a three-point lead but junior guard John Brisco excited the crowd with a game-tying trey with 56 seconds left.  The Panthers played solid defense from that point and forced the Bearkats into a shot clock violation with 19 ticks remaining.  However, Brisco's game-winning trey fell short at the buzzer for the first overtime.

Prairie View A&M struck first in overtime as Hagood hit a pair of free throws but SHSU anwered with a trey from Baxter to claim a 84-83 lead with 4:04 left.  Scott's three-point attempt rimmed out on the ensuing possession but he redeemed himself on PVAMU's next possession with a pair of free throws to move PV ahead 85-84.  Two free throws by SHSU's Kaheem Ransom gave the lead back to the Bearkats and they managed to hold on up until 17 seconds remaining.

With 17 seconds left, Brisco hit the paint aggressively and scored a layup for the 91-90 deficit.  He missed the ensuing free throw and the Panthers were forced to foul from that point.  SHSU's Jabari Peters hit both free throws to extend its lead to 93-90 but Brisco answered once again with a big trey to knot the score at 93-all.  The Panther defense did its part on the final possession of the extra period as SHSU misfired on the eventual game-winning shot.

A free throw by Louis Munks broke the tie to open the second overtime but SHSU knotted the contest once again after 1-of-2 baskets from Peters.  Both teams were tied once again nearly a minute-and-a-half later but the Bearkats put the game away with a 7-1 run over a span of 3:30.  The Panthers closed to within 106-103 with six seconds left and had an opportunity to regain possession of the ball but the officiating staff awarded the Bearkats a timeout with Peters falling out of bounds.  With PVAMU forced to foul, Peters nailed both free throws with two seconds left to ice the game.

Five Panthers scored in double figures led by Brisco's 26 points.  Scott finished with 18 points and seven rebounds followed by 14 points and 11 assists from Hagood.  York tallied 14 points along with 12 from Demondre Chapman and 10 from Munks.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday as they'll travel to College Station, texas for a 7 p.m. matchup at Texas A&M on live Fox Sportsnet.
