Women's Basketball Suffers Close Loss In David Jones Classic

BOX SCORE HOUSTON - Despite winning the turnover battle and getting a 22-point performance from junior point guard Jeanette Jackson, Prairie View A&M could not take down Stephen F. Austin in a 76-70 loss on Saturday in the opening game of the David Jones Memorial Classic at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Trailing 70-60 with a little over a minute left to play Prairie View A&M went on a 5-1 run and pulled to within six points with 50 seconds remaining following a layup through contact by Larissa Scott. Following one made free throw by SFA, redshirt sophomore guard Gabrielle Scott drained a three to cut her team's deficit to 72-68. However, the Lady Jacks managed to hold on to that lead despite a gutsy performance by Prairie View A&M.

Prairie View A&M fought from behind for most of the second half, but the Lady Panthers remained within striking distance. Asha Hampton-Finch took a pass from Larissa Scott and put it in the basket with 8:10 remaining to cut Stephen F. Austin's lead to 52-46. Hampton-Finch fouled out with 7:28 remaining with four points and four rebounds to her name. Larissa Scott finished with a nine points and a team-high of seven rebounds. 

The Lady Panthers trailed 30-28 following a Jackson three in the first half, but the LadyJacks went on a 12-6 run close out the half and go into the locker room with a 42-34 lead. Prairie View A&M scored four unanswered points out of the gates in the second half to cut its deficit to 42-38 following a Shamiya Brooks layup. 

Shaneece Stephens provided a spark off of the bench, hitting a three with 11 minutes left in the first half to give Prairie View A&M an 18-15 lead. Stephens scored nine first-half points for coach Brown off of the bench and finished the game at that mark too. 

Trailing 9-6, in the first half, the Lady Panthers embarked on a 7-2 run that was capped off by a Jeanette Jackson three point shot with 12:30 remaining to tie the game at 13-13. That shot snapped an 0-for-11 three-point shooting slump by Jackson since she lit up Rice with nine points from downtown in the season-opener. Jackson went from being ice cold to on fire from downtown. She went 5-for-6 from three-point range to hitting five three-pointers in the first half. Jackson tallied a game-high 22 points to complement four assists and four steals.

As a team Prairie View A&M was on fire in the first half, shooting 70 percent as from downtown as the Lady Panthers scored a season-high 34 first half points. They finished 8-for-16 from downtown (57 percent).

Porsha Roberts led the way for Stephen F. Austin (3-3) in her team's victory, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. Prairie View A&M (0-4) will play Houston at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in Hofheinz Pavilion as they attempt to bounce back from the loss.
