Guillory Earns All-SWAC Honor Again, PV Soccer Prepares For SWAC Tourney

Prairie View A&M senior Angie Guillory was selected to her third-consecutive First-Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection and will lead the Lady Panthers into their 5:30 p.m. SWAC Tournament game against Mississippi Valley State on Thursday at the Houston Amateur Sports Park along with Second-Team All SWAC junior midfielder Celene Batrez.

Guillory ended the season with six goals and four assists which totaled 16 points, placing second on her team and fifth in the SWAC in points. She had a season high of 2 goals in a 2-0 win over Howard on Sept. 22, 2013 and matched it with two more vs. Alcorn State on Oct. 20 in a 9-0 win.

She and Batrez gave opponents fits offensively on the attack. Batrez ended the season with six goals and five assists which totaled to 17 points. She placed first on her team and third in the SWAC in points, and she completed a hat trick with three goals in a 5-0 win over rival Texas Southern (Oct. 11, 2013).

Despite having the No. 1 scoring defense in the conference, Prairie View A&M failed to have a single player voted to the All-SWAC team. Among the notable players left off was Debbie Arguelles. She was the middle linebacker so to speak of a defense that pitched five-consecutive shutouts to close out the season and outscored opponents 23-2 in the final eight games of the season. She finished the season with a .538 SOG percentage and with four goals (3rd on team). Arguelles was voted the SWAC Preseason Defender Of The Year and was critical in a defense that finished 1st in the SWAC in goals allowed (26), second in the SWAC with a 1.74 goals against average and first in the league with seven shutouts.

The Lady Panthers have been preparing for a win-or-go-home game against Mississippi Valley State, the only team that Prairie View A&M failed to score on at home this season. The teams finished in a 0-0 tie at Prairie View A&M when the game was called in the 70th minute due to lightning delays.

"We've been trying to stay focused,"  Prairie View A&M coach Abe Garcia said. "We've been approaching things like normal. I feel like we're going into the tournament a lot healthier than in years past. I think that's going to be something that's going to help us."
