PV Soccer Takes Out MVSU, Advances In SWAC Tourney

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M senior forward Angie Guillory noticed a mismatch and took advantage of it. She dribbled past a couple of Mississippi Valley State defenders and blasted a shot off of her left foot past the goal keeper for a goal in the 85th minute to keep the Lady Panthers' hopes alive in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. Prairie View A&M defeated MVSU 1-0 to advance a semifinal game against No. 1 seeded Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Houston Amateur Sports Park.

The victory was laced with the taste of sweet revenge for the Lady Panthers. Guillory remembers being bounced out of the 2011 SWAC Tournament by Mississippi Valley in penalty kicks. She and her teammates have been waiting to strike back.

"It felt great," Guillory said. "It was about time. We owed them that. So it was about time we beat them."

Prairie View A&M out-shot the MVSU 6-1 in the first period before both teams opened the offenses up in desperation in the second period with the Lady Panthers taking 10 shots compared to nine by Mississippi Valley.

Lady Panthers goal keeper Bianca Garza recorded her sixth-consecutive shut out in the victory, picking up nine saves in the process.

"My defense was there the whole time," Garza said. "Whenever I was down they cleared the ball and didn't let them score. I'm really proud of them because they talked and played together."
