Lady Panthers Soccer Eliminated From SWAC Tournament

BOX SCORE

The Prairie View A&M soccer team was eliminated in the semifinal round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament for the third-consecutive year, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Alabama State in a match that felt more like a championship meeting.

Prairie View A&M junior midfielder Celene Batrez was the first to strike in the match. She took a pass from sophomore forward Breanna Powell and scored in the fourth minute to give the Lady Panthers a 1-0 lead on the No. 1 seeded Alabama State Hornets.

The Lady Panthers held their ground until the 23rd minute when SWAC Player Of The Year Aaliyah Lewis hit defensive Ariela Lewis for a goal to tie the game. That goal against Lady Panthers goal keeper Bianca Garza was the first goal she gave up all season.

Ariela Lewis scored her second goal in the 62nd minute to put Alabama State up 2-1. Prairie View A&M had two late chances to tie the game when junior midfielder Katherine Sheppard took a shot in 83rd minute that went wide left.

Junior midfielder Melissa Kalbfleisch took a shot late in the 84th minute but it was pulled in by Alabama State keeper Kylie Hathaway. Those were the final shots taken by the Lady Panthers in the match.

Prairie View A&M finished the season with a 7-9-1 record, playing its best ball at the end of the year. The Lady Panthers went 7-2-1 in their final 10 games.
