GREELEY, Colo. - A promising start failed to hold up as Northern Colorado pulled away in the second half to claim an 87-70 win over Prairie View A&M in the finale of the Colorado State Challenge.
The Panthers got off to a sizzling start to open the contest as they led 11-4 less than three minutes in and 20-10 with 14:19 remaining following Montrael Scott's three-pointer. However, the Panthers cooled during a six-minute scoreless stretch and Northern Colorado found its groove with a 10-0 surge to tie the contest at 20-all at the 8:04 mark.
Panther guard John Brisco ended the drought with a basket and the Panthers held on to the lead by a thin margin until 3:14 remaining as Northern Colorado claimed a 32-31 advantage. Scott tied the game on the ensuing possession with a free throw but the Panthers were outscored 8-4 to close the half en route to a 40-30 halftime deficit.
Prairie View A&M remained within striking distance to open the second half but Northern Colorado broke away with a 20-7 run to claim a 60-43 margin at the 14:34 mark. Two minutes later, the Panthers closed to within 60-51 but that would be the closest they would draw as the Bears increased their lead en route to the win.
Louis Munks scored a team-high 20 points as it marked his highest output since Feb. 4, 2012. Scott's 12 points marked the seventh time in eight games he has surpassed double figures while Brisco added 16 points. Junior guard Tre Hagood led PVAMU with six rebounds, two steals and six assists.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 8 with a home match-up versus Dallas Christian inside the William Nicks Building.
