LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Despite a career-high 27 points by junior guard Montrael Scott, a late first half run by UCLA created a huge deficit the Prairie View A&M Panthers failed to overcome in a 95-71 loss at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday evening.
UCLA sprinted out to an 11-2 lead slightly past the 17 minute mark on the clock before the Panthers regrouped as Tre Hagood scored four points for a 7-4 surge to draw within 15-9. The Panthers kept the game close over the next few minutes but UCLA scored seven quick points over a span of 2:12 to claim a double digit margin with 8:12 on the clock. Free throws by Louis Munks and Demondre Chapman drew the Panthers to within 26-16 a minute later but UCLA took advantage of four Panther turnovers and found its offensive groove to close the half out on a 24-8 surge to lead 50-24.
After a slow start to begin the second half, the Panthers came into their own and settled down on both ends of the court as they went on an 18-5 run midway through the contest to trim their deficit. During the run, Scott was in a zone with eight points during that span, including a four-point play at the 11:45 mark. Scott closed out the second half on a strong note as he scored 25 of his team-high 27 points in the second stanza.
Along with Scott, who also dished out four assists, Munks finished in double digits with 13 points. Senior post Jules Montgomery scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a shot as the California native played the final regular season game in his home state.
The Panthers will return to the court next Saturday as they'll face Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. at 2 p.m.
