MADISON, Wis. - Playing one of the top teams in the nation, the Prairie View A&M Panthers fought hard but came up short as the No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers claimed an 80-43 win on Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
Wisconsin jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Jules Montgomery nailed a jumper to put the Panthers on the board slightly before the 16 minute mark. The Panthers closed to within 9-4 on Demondre Chapman's jumper but Wisconsin broke away with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to lead 23-6. Prairie View A&M responded with a 7-0 run of its own to draw within 10 at 23-13 with 6:37 remaining in the half. However, the Panthers struggled to find the basket down the stretch while Wisconsin could as the Badgers claimed a 37-18 halftime advantage.
A pair of three-pointers by John Brisco and Montrael Scott drew the Panthers to within 17 early in the second half as they trailed 43-26. But once again, Prairie View A&M struggled from the field over the next nine minutes as they shot just 2-for-13 with three turnovers. On the opposite end of the court, Wisconsin shot 7-of-15 and had success pounding the glass offensively as they grabbed five offensive rebounds during that span which led to several second chance opportunities and a 65-31 lead in which they never relinquished.
Scott finished as PVAMU's top scorer with 14 points while Tre Hagood dished out seven assists. Montgomery grabbed seven rebounds along with scoring seven points in 22 minutes of action.
After an exhaustive non-conference slate, the Panthers can finally turn towards conference play as they'll return to the Baby Dome next Saturday afternoon for their SWAC opener versus Southern at 5 p.m.
