Panthers Return Home For Critical SWAC Matchup

GAME NOTES

The Prairie View A&M Panthers begin the final stretch of regular season play as they'll host Mississippi Valley State Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the Baby Dome.  The contest will be shown live on PANTHERVISION and also broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.  The first 250 fans in attendance (starting with the 3 p.m. women's contest) will receive themed sun shades as Saturday's game is designed as "Shade Out MVSU".

The Panthers are coming off a 65-60 loss to Jackson State on Monday night in Jackson, Miss.  Currently, the Panthers are sixth in the SWAC standings but with two teams ahead of them ineligible, the Panthers are a half-game out of the No. 2 seed.

Prairie View A&M has won 7-of-13 versus the Delta Devils with six of the wins at home.  Head coach Byron Rimm II is 7-7 lifetime versus MVSU as MVSU won the first meeting in January at Itta Bena, Miss.

The 2011-12 SWAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, MVSU lost its coach and nearly its entire roster shortly after the season and has struggled with a 4-19 record under new coach Chico Potts, the team's assistant coach for the past few years.  The Delta Devils feature the SWAC's leading scorer in guard and junior newcomer Davon Usher.  Usher is averaging 17.8 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding with six boards per outing.  He's the reigning Co-SWAC Player of the Week after averaging 27.5 points and seven rebounds over the past two games last weekend.

Due to NCAA restrictions which prohibit Mississippi Valley State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern from participating in postseason play, this year's SWAC schedule is all about seeding as the regular season champion will earn a first round bye in the SWAC Tournament.

Senior shooting guard Jourdan DeMuynck leads the Panthers with 14.6 points per game and is pulling down a team-high 6.5 rebounds per outing.  Senior guard Carl Blair follows with 10.1 points and a team-high 5.1 assists.
