After waiting two days to hit the field due to weather, the Prairie View A&M softball team picked up a pair of wins in contrasting styles as they swept a season-opening doubleheader over Huston-Tillotson 8-1 and 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Lady Panther Softball Field.

In game one, the Lady Panthers put forth a solid offensive performance as they belted out 11 hits in an 8-1 victory over the Rams.

Newcomer Brenicia Woods recorded PV's first hit of the season with a double in the bottom of the first and scored PV's first run on Preseason All-SWAC catcher Shontel Lopez's RBI single.  After a scoreless second frame by both teams, the Lady Panthers exploded with a six-run third inning to break the game open.

Woods hit a leadoff single and stole second to open the inning was and eventually scored after Leanna Flores' RBI single for a 2-0 lead.  Lopez drove in her second run of the afternoon with an RBI double followed by Alissa Navarro's RBI triple which increased the margin to 4-0.  An HTU error provided PV's fifth run of the game followed by a two-run homer from Lexus Walker en route to a 7-0 advantage.

HTU jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth but PV answered in the bottom half as first baseman Kierra Bridges logged an RBI double to score Navarro.  Junior pitcher and Preseason All-SWAC Second Teamer Cally Falls kept the Rams' offense at bay as she picked up her first win of the year following a five-strikeout performance.

Lopez, Navarro and Woods both finished with a pair of hits while Navarro and Woods also scored two runs each.  Lopez led the team with two RBIs.

The Lady Panthers found themselves in a pitcher's duel in game two as senior Lauren Grun threw a one-hitter along with two RBIs from Woods in a 2-1 victory.

Prairie View A&M relied on its defense and timely pitching from Grun as she kept the Rams off-balanced while the defense made several big plays with runners in scoring position.

The pressure began to mount in the fifth as the Rams loaded the bases with no outs.  However, Grun fought back and recorded a bases-loaded strikeout but issued a sacrifice RBI to HTU's Courtney Herndon for an early 1-0 deficit.  But once again, the PV defense was behind Grun as left fielder Olivia Pace threw out an HTU runner at third for the final out of the inning.

The Lady Panthers opened the fifth with a bang as second baseman Tiffany Robertson drew a leadoff walk followed by Walker's single.  An HTU error advanced both Walker and Robertson into scoring position but the momentum briefly stalled as HTU's Roxanne Rodriguez picked up a big strikeout.  However, PV continued to fight as Woods singled in PV's only two runs of the game as her two-RBI single scored both Walker and Robertson for a 2-1 lead.

From that point, Grun and the PV defense did the rest as they held HTU hitless for the final two innings.

Woods and Walker both logged two hits each with Woods driving in both runs.  Grun won her season debut as she struck out three in the complete game effort.

The Lady Panthers will travel to San Antonio, Texas next Wednesday for a doubleheader versus Our Lady Of The Lake beginning at 1 p.m.
