Men's Basketball Homestand Ends On Sour Note

BOX SCORE

Arkansas-Pine Bluff took control of the contest midway through the first half and never looked back as the Prairie View A&M Panthers had one of their worst shooting nights of the season in a 76-47 loss inside the William J. Nicks Building on Monday night.

With the average margin of victory only 5.2 points between both teams over the past 13 meetings, the game started off close as there were three ties and a pair of lead changes over the first 10 minutes.  Tied at 14-all with 9:17 remaining, UAPB took advantage of three PV turnovers along with several missed shots as they turned a tight contest into a 27-17 lead after a 13-3 run which spanned five and a half minutes.  PV's Demondre Chapman single-handedly ended the slump as he hit consecutive layups over a 37-second span to trim the deficit to 27-21 at the 3:01 mark.  However, the Golden Lions regrouped and upped their lead back to double digits as they went into the locker room on top 36-25.

The Panthers closed to within seven early in the second half as Carl Blair tipped in a basket followed by Mayol Riathin's putback at the 17:53 mark.  UAPB's Tevin Hammond scored on back-to-back layups for an 11-point margin but Riathin was there again to keep the Panthers close as his jumper closed the gap to 40-31.  From that point, the Panthers began unglued as UAPB broke the game open with a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes to lead 56-33.  Nothing went right for the Panthers during that span as they committed a pair of turnovers in addition to only shooting 1-of-7.  On the other end of the court, UAPB attacked the inside with a vengeance as they threw down several dunks while also nailing three treys.

Prairie View A&M never recovered from the onslaught as the Golden Lions led by as much as 32 points with time winding down.  Monday night's scoring margin marked UAPB's largest against the Panthers since a 23-point win on Jan. 21, 2006.

For the first time this season, not one player surpassed the double figure mark in scoring as Jules Montgomery and Ryan Gesiakowski scored nine points each.  Montgomery and Riathin both led the Panthers with six rebounds apiece while Josh Eleby added eight points, four rebounds and two blocks.

Prairie View A&M hits the road for the final time of the regular season this weekend as they'll face Alabama State at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.  The team will face Alabama A&M on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
