HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers finished their 54-39 win over Alabama A&M on Monday night having accomplished a few season and career milestones in addition to creating separation in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.
Prairie View A&M beat Alabama A&M in Huntsville for the first time under third-year coach Toyelle Wilson. In doing so, the Lady Panthers also helped Wilson pick up her 50th career win.
Lead by Jeanette Jackson's extremely efficient 16-point performance, the Lady Panthers had three of their starters finish scoring in the double figures and witnessed an inspiring game by senior guard JaQuandria Williams off the bench. The Lady Panthers put together a complete game and flexed their muscles on the defensive end, demonstrating why they have the No. 1 scoring defense in the SWAC. They won back-to-back road games versus SWAC opponents for the first time this season, sweeping both Alabama State and Alabama A&M as they improved to 9-7 in SWAC play.
Senior forward Latia Williams finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the win, and sophomore center Larissa Scott also provided 11 points and seven rebounds. JaQuandria Williams was a game-changer off of the bench. She disrupted Alabama A&M's offense with three steals. She had 10 rebounds and finished two points shy of a double-double. She and junior guard LaReahn Washington formed a volatile defensive combo off of the bench as the Lady Panthers forced Alabama A&M into 15 turnovers and only committed seven turnovers as a team. Point guard Jeanette Jackson was highly efficient as she committed zero turnovers for the third time this season. She shot 4-for-7 from the field and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Prairie View A&M trailed the Lady Bulldogs 24-22 at the half. However, the Lady Panthers limited Alabama A&M to 15 second half points and 28 percent shooting from the field.
Now the Lady Panthers will try to close out their season with wins in their final homestand of the year. They will host Alcorn State in a 5:30 p.m. game on Thursday at the William Nicks Building, and then will close it out on Saturday on Senior Day at 3 p.m. versus Southern.
